The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted new evidence of complex organic molecules — the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it — on the frigid surface of Pluto, a new study finds.
Hubble observations revealed that some substances on Pluto's surface are absorbing more ultraviolet light than expected. The compounds in question may well be organics, possibly complex hydrocarbons or nitrogen-containing molecules, researchers said.
The dwarf planet Pluto is known to harbor ices of methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on its surface. The ultraviolet-absorbing chemical species may have been produced when sunlight or super-speedy subatomic particles known as cosmic rays interacted with these ices.
Pluto circles the sun in a distant ring of icy bodies known as the Kuiper Belt. Many other Kuiper Belt objects are also quite red, and researchers have previously speculated that organics are responsible for their ruddiness as well.
Pluto's ultraviolet spectrum has changed compared to Hubble measurements taken during the 1990s. Hubble's powerful Cosmic Origins Spectrograph instrument was used to make the find. These differences may be related to changes in the dwarf planet's terrain since then, researchers said. It's possible that a steep increase in Pluto's atmospheric pressure has caused changes in Pluto's surface.
Overall, the new Hubble observations shed further light on Pluto a few years ahead of the first-ever spacecraft visit to the cold, distant world.
The discovery made with Hubble suggests that even more exciting discoveries about Pluto's composition and surface evolution are likely to be in store when NASA's New Horizons spacecraft arrives at Pluto in 2015.
New Horizons launched in January 2006 on a 4-billion-mile (6.4-billion-kilometer) journey to Pluto. The probe is due to make its closest approach to the dwarf planet on July 14, 2015. On that date, New Horizons will be just 7,767 miles (12,500 km) away from the frigid world.
A Czech national was nabbed in Argentina for trying to board a transatlantic flight with 247 live animals including poisonous snakes and endangered reptiles packed in a bulging suitcase.
The man identified as Karel Abelovsky, 51, was caught while trying to board a flight for Madrid when shocked baggage X-ray technicians and staff at the Iberia Airlines desk at Ezeiza Airport in greater Buenos Aires noticed "organic substances moving inside," local media reported.
When they opened the bag, they found more than 200 reptiles and mollusks, among them nine species of poisonous snakes including South American pitvipers, packed in clear plastic containers.
There were also 15 venomous vipers, including two yararas -- which can measure up to 1.50 meters (five feet) -- and several young boas. Some of the animals were reported to be extremely rare and protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
Two of the animals were found dead and most of the others could have suffered the same fate due to a lack of oxygen if the suitcase had been placed in the plane's cargo area.
The discovery was made on December 7 but only recently came to light. A judge has charged Abelovsky with attempted smuggling, and he faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Researchers suspect that an exotic species smuggling ring was behind the trafficking attempt.

As 2012 approaches, it is time to look back at all the lotions, potions, and polishes we bought this year -- the ones that actually went to use and didn't sit in the medicine cabinet in an unopened pretty box. While plenty of people undoubtedly picked up grocery store favorites that didn't involve a computer query, Sephora topped Yahoo!'s most-searched online beauty resources for 2011, followed by Avon, Ulta, Chanel, Sally Beauty Supply, Mary Kay, MAC, Clinique, Proactive, and the Body Shop. Following are the megasuppliers' 10 best-selling items that everyone stockpiled in 2011.
OPI Nail Polish
Sephora's best-selling OPI polish in "Only Gold for Me" is a clear polish with chunky and micro gold glitter. It gets big points for not chipping. Reviewers brag that they can wear the $9.50 polish for two weeks or more without problems or peeling.
Anew Ultimate Age Repair Day Cream SPF 25
This $34 Avon lotion promises to restore youthful vitality and offer results in three days, with more impressive benefits with four weeks of use. There are believers, who gush that their skin looks "flawlessly smooth" and "silky soft," and claim they could indeed see the results after the first application.
Philosophy Hope in a Jar
This $38 daily moisturizer rose to the top at the superstore ULTA Beauty, which carries more than 20,000 products. Hope in a Jar is known for a "whipped, fluffy texture" that seems to "just melt into skin." Along with hydration and antioxidant protection, it improves skin tone and does "wonders for acne," fans say.
Chanel Glossimer in Spark
Chanel's top seller is a $28.50 lip gloss that is heavy on shine and has built a devoted fan following on makeup review sites for its ability to provide a sheer berry hint of color. In addition, "it isn't sticky" and has a "fine glinty gold shimmer that is absolutely perfect."
Ion Keratin Smoothing Treatment
The formula makes hair smooth and soft and reduces frizz and curls. The treatment combines wheat germ and argan oil and lasts about six weeks. Curly-haired consumers rave because at $19.99, it protects hair and refines texture without the use of formaldehyde.
Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover
The gentle eye makeup remover works on waterproof mascara, and no one loses any lashes in the process. The $15 Mary Kay product also won a 2011 Allure magazine award, which certainly must have boosted sales. Reviewers say that it "removes the toughest eyeliner and mascara" with a single cotton-ball swipe, conditions lashes, and doesn't irritate sensitive eyes.
MAC lipstick in Snob
This lipstick leads MAC's calculations for 2011. It is described as the perfect pale counterpart to a smoky eye -- "gorgeous, cool-toned pastel pink." Reviewers love the satin finish with "subtle sheen" that "lasts for ages." It's available online for $14.50.
Clinique High-Impact Mascara (Black)
Addicts of this $14.50 thickening mascara say it won't leave mid-day raccoon eyes and swear it volumizes, lengthens, and creates "false lash" effects. Those with sensitive eyes also say it isn't irritating.
Proactiv 3-Step System
The 30-day system ($19.95) includes an oil-free cleanser, toner, and a repairing treatment. The formulas rely on micro-crystal benzoyl peroxide to clear acne. It probably doesn't hurt sales when you have a little marketing help from Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Jessica Simpson.
The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector
This $19 super moisturizing hand cream is designed to provide 12 hours of softness and contains skin-conditioning beeswax from Cameroon. The hemp seed oil is said to be nature's cure for dry skin, and users say it works for "sandpaper hands" and "does not wash off like most of your moisturizers."
